Concerns About Sensational Media: R. Andrew Clark III

Shows such as Topnotch Idiots, Jerry Springer, Maury Povich, and other sensational, drama-driven programs often place Black people at the center of conflict for entertainment. These productions frequently rely on emotional reactions, buffoonery, and violence to attract viewers, turning harmful stereotypes into profit.

In many cases, the people featured may be pursuing brief attention or responding to deliberately provocative situations. Either way, the result is the same: these shows can reinforce narratives that portray Black people as overly emotional, violent, unintelligent, rowdy, or “ratchet.” That raises an important question: should this continue to be dismissed as harmless entertainment, or should it be challenged for the damage it causes?

Patterns Worth Questioning

Consider the kinds of conflicts these shows repeatedly highlight:

·         Why are East Indians rarely shown arguing and fighting over paternity drama on shows like Maury?

·         Why are Asians rarely portrayed in the kind of relationship chaos featured on Jerry Springer–style programs?

·         Why do groups like Topnotch Idiots so often seek reactions in rough neighborhoods and appear to target Black men most frequently?

Although other ethnic groups are sometimes provoked as well, Black men often seem to be the primary focus. That pattern deserves scrutiny, especially when it contributes to a broader public image shaped by spectacle rather than fairness.

Why I Believe We Should Stop Supporting It

Much like the ongoing debate over the N-word, I believe our support for and consumption of these shows should end. They promote a damaging image of our community, and even when they claim to reflect reality, the deliberate provocation behind that portrayal—especially when it is done for profit—makes participation and viewership hard to justify.

For that reason, abstaining from these programs is not just a matter of taste; it is a decision to reject media that benefits from degrading representation.

Topnotch Idiots is a popular American online comedy and public prank creator group. Founded in 2016, the group is led by Aris Sureni, widely known online as Opto, alongside members like AJ Wolfy and Alfredo. They have amassed over 4.8 million subscribers on their main YouTube channel and built an ecosystem of secondary channels.
